Hi Kate. Actually it is not just sugar that diabetes is about, but glucose, which comes in many other foods also. Such as starchy foods turn to glucose (potatoes, bread, corn, just to name a few) and then there are also milk, and milk products that turn to glucose, and fruit is high in natural sugar so it is limited, even peas are limited cause of the natural sugar (?) in them. To say a no sugar diet is not really helpful. Besides, if you balance your daily amount of glucose you can still have actual sugar; it just has to be factored into the daily glucose amount. What you need now is to meet with a licensed diabetic counselor/nutritionist so they can explain what you can eat and give you an exchange booklet (mine even helped me set up my daily glucose limit/goal, as it is a balancing that you need: not too many and not too few) But you can’t go to like GNC or some place like that and talk to one of their “nutritionist” as they are not trained in diabetic knowledge.
Every medication I ever took over all my time of being diabetic (since Feb of 2002) have all said I should have a medic alert necklace or bracelet or such. That is standard procedure. It is usually even recommended by physicians. If for some reason you have any diabetic reaction and are unable to let those around you know what is happening, then the medic alert is there to inform them you are diabetic. Some diabetic meds, depending on how they work, can lower your glucose (etc) too much and you can lose consciousness (or such) and those around you need to know about you being diabetic and also what meds you are on so they can give you correct medical help, that would be why the medications say to get a medic alert.
That is just a little bit of information. Can you talk to your doctor for more, or even see a licensed diabetic counselor/nutritionist for the rest of the information? Also the ADA (American Diabetic Association) is another excellent place for information. I am a member and they are great.

any diabetics that are true campers not taking a motor home but filings
a pack and hiking 20 miles into the wildness. I am wondering about
keeping the insulin at the perfect temp. has you guys know it cant get
to cold or to hot. with the hiking i do the temp range from about 30
degrees or even colder to 100 degrees. Also being more active will need
more food . Also at night unless winter camping I can’t keep sugar or
glucose tabs or candy in the tent for reactions that stuff will have to
be up a tree. Because of bears. unless your using food it has to be up
a tree. So any backpackers out there. My other thing is every year I
help teach class that takes the grand canyon and good water proof
contours. that would be well padded so that if the raft carrying
supplies got flipped over which happens at least once a trip. we don’t
avoid waves we seek them out beeches the group i go with is pro
kakykers like my self. The other thing is I hate the idea but i may
have to give up soloing summits becuse if i had a reaction. I might be
the only person out there for days at a time. I am sure I will here
bring a cell phone they don’t work in the wilderness becuse there are
no towers and stalite phones are illigel. your not aloed to bring
m,achiens in. ans also the oens they do make our to alrge and heavey.

What part of EXAMPLE do you not understand? I did not say that *was* the
amount, I was using it as an example. A hypothetical amount. Do you even

THis is kidna off topic but i need to vent. It looks liek i am goan
in my time of gried I dont want any smart carp
loose my fur baby my dog that has been with me through all the hell i
have been through this year. THis moring I got woke up to ehr scremaing
the scriest scream you have ver heard a dog scream. I jumped up and she
was having amasive seizure. I held on to her and called a frindand a
fat. I asked the vet if I ould use out of my drug box being an emt I
carry a drug box some of the drugs we use on humans he said yes and the
doeses and said she said she would met. me. I got them into ehr and it
slowed her sezures down but dint stopthem. me and the vet finly got hem
stoped. and me and a frind drove to to antoehr town that has a doggy
hopsitel. and got her intot he icu. and they stred lots of drugs on ehre
not knowing what happond to her. they said it looked like poising and my
best bet was get abck to home and look the yeard over. I found hamburger
peices all over. and ipend ne up and found flackes we think it is rat
poisen come to find otu my naghbor who lives 4 miels down the road dog
had the same thign going on the are layign side by side in the hsoptiel.
We got a hold of the sheriff and he said in town and out here int he
ocnty there has ben a rash of dog posinings. I am jsut lost I am in
tears that I will loose here. I am geing read to head abck to the
hspite. if she lvies she will ahve major orgam damge andprobly doggy
