Helped Bill with getting the magnolia tree in the front yard today. I was so happy to find out there is a hardy regular magnolia that can be planted here in Missouri. We had the ones that had the pink/purple flowers and were called magnolias, but were nothing like the ones in Florida and the real southern states kind. Then when I was at the Garden Center a couple weeks ago I saw one, and they told me it was called Brackens Magnolia (after the man who cultivated the regular southern kind to be able to withstand our cold temps). I had to have one. It only is about 7 feet tall, but is just full of big bloom buds and I am so excited for those beautiful white blooms to open up. We have a couple more trees waiting to be planted in the front yard yet, a white flowering crab apple, and a pink weeping cherry (no fruit, ornamental only). We already planted other ones around the edge of the woods and just into the woods (for shade): redbuds and white flowering dogwood. I also got
William to plant a line of shrubs/bushes across the front of the yard so that when they grow up they will be a good privacy thing (won’t be able to see past them) and also lots of different pretty flowers in the spring. Oh and my weeping pussy willow tree is at the entrance to the driveway.
We also finally got the front and back yard seeded for grass (right now it is just bare dirt). I am on water duty today. Run the sprinkler for an hour and then move to another part of the yard to water for an hour and move……….
Us old folks live such fast pace exciting lives.
NO weeding of flower beds, so should not find any copperheads to get bit by. One good thing to a bare dirt yard. ![]()
I did some “cooking” today also. I made up two batches of humming bird food. We had two of them at our front room windows Sunday and I didn’t have my feeders out yet. I finally got them put together, filled, and put out this after noon. Now I hope the little guys hurry and come back soon. I made enough food to fill all the feeders and have a batch in the refrigerator for refills.
Love,
Sue
