To everyone new

April 24th, 2004 · No Comments

Hi and welcome to everyone new! I’m Sue and I was diagnosed in early 2002. I can associate with the feelings of being scared, but like Steph and Kate both said, it really does get better. Important things are to be sure not to miss medications if on them, if controlling with just diet and exercise, be sure to follow that and also another major help is educate yourself. One of the best things I can recommend education wise is about the eating. I learned from a licensed diabetic trained nutritionist from my hospital and learned so much about how to eat, what to eat, and all that was needed for correct diet for us. I spent several hours with her and we kept in touch for at least a year. I still can call her if I have any questions. As Julie mentioned in her email, she was able to take classes also through the hospital. All the knowledge you can get about how to handle this can make a world of difference. Plus keeping in contact with your doctor. I see mine every 3-4 months.
Taking your blood glucose readings every day and doing the A1C on a regular basis from your doctor. Julie, about the home A1C; I haven’t tried it myself, but they reviewed it in the American Diabetes magazine and they gave it good praise. They said the accuracy of it was found to be just as well as the professional ones done at the labs. But they did still stress to be sure to have the A1C done by your doctor on a regular basis.

Sorry it has taken me so long to write to everyone who is new. I’ve been out of things for most of the month. But seem to be on the mend now. Just only have the asthma still going on (boy am I so darn tired of coughing!!!!!) and it feels like the bronchitis is getting better. Will see the respiratory specialist this Friday, July 1 for my one week check up after getting out of hospital with pneumonia. Should hear from my endocrinologist sometime today with the biopsy results of the thyroid lump. Will let you guys know about that as soon as I hear.

Love and best wishes to all,

Sue
