New member… type 1 for 27 years

March 31st, 2005 · No Comments

Hello Everyone,
I will like to introduce myself. I have had type 1 diabetes for 27
years, I am 33 years old. So basically, all of my life.
I am married with four kids. Yes, four ages 11,7,3,19 months!!! and
I run my own mortgage business (still at the start up stage) NO
problems or complications except maybe my own women issues.
I became a pumper two years ago and will never go back to taking
shots. shots are hard to predict because sometimes the insulin gets
stuck in the fatty deposits and release at a later time so when it is
time for your next dose you could be actually be taking two doses and
then have a terrible insulin reaction. I really got sick of waking
up in the hospital because my sugar went to low. no problem like
this with the pump
No serious complications from the diabetes except vitreous surgery,
cataract surgery and removal of scar tissue in my left eye five years

ago. It happened so quick one day I could see fine the next I had a
ton of blood in that eye. You could actually see the blood move
around, pretty gross. That use to be the “bad” eye. Two months
later that was the “good eye” and still hold strong.
Well now I just had surgery in the right eye (the other eye) three
weeks ago which includes vitreous surgery, removal of scar tissue
because it lifted the retina in the corner of my eye, and lens
removal (I will get a new lens after I am all healed up. Oh I forgot
(I don’t know how, it is a pain) A gas bubble. The worse part of
this ordeal was having to lay face down for a week. I was completely
blind except for direct light for three days after the surgery due to
blood and the bubble, I could see out of my eye walking into
surgery. On the third day, i could see somewhat of images and bright
colors (good sign) As the days go by things get a little better. I
can now see faces, blurred images on the TV, If I try real hard I can
make out some letters. ONce the bubble disappears I will see
better. It is two weeks today since the surgery and now the bubbles
have broken up into a lot of little bubbles, this is driving me crazy
but I am blessed to know I will have vision after this heals.
Believe it or not my A1C is usually between 6-7.5 but I think my eye
problems happened due to how I took care of myself in highschool and
in my early twenties. or it could be the lack of going to the eye
doctor as often as I should have. Thank God, we live in an age where
Technology has advance. But I am at a perfect weight and I am
active.
My goal is to be an encouragement to anyone that needs it and learn
new things that I don’t know, even after 27 years with this I am
still learning new things every day.
Overall, I am blessed. My kidneys are fine, heart is fine, no high
blood pressure, and my eyes doing a lot better so they are fine as
well, my right eye just need some special attention at the moment but
it will heal soon. I am able to do everything I wanted to do. Life
is great. I have had my downs but that takes too much energy so I opt
for a more positive life style. Never hated my diabetes, I embraced
it. Diabetes has kept me focus in a lot of ways. Believe it or not,
it keeps us aware of our body so we tend to take better care of
ourself opposed to a person that is not diabetic.
Ask me all the questions you like because I am sure I will hae a ton
to ask of you guys.
