I know this is nothing compared to what all the poor people who were affected by Katrina went through, but have been calling work to check on hubby. He went out to burn a pile of brush (left over from when we got the house built) and came in with stings. He’d gotten into a nest of ground hornets. He had three on his left upper arm and two on his right chest just above the collar bone. I wanted to put a poultice of baking soda mixed with water on the stings, but he wanted to take a shower. (some times I wonder where his mind is, sigh………………………) Of course by the time he was done with that, it was too late to do the baking soda poultice. But the sting sites were welling up. They were the sizes of quarters when I called our doctor’s office. They said I should have put baking soda mixed with water on the stings right away. I told them I knew that but man would not let me. They said half an hour later is too late. But to give him some Benedril. Luckily I had some,
and gave him one. Tried talking him into staying home so I could keep an eye on him and the stings, but man would not do that. So sent another Benedril with him to take at work. He said they are itching some, but haven’t gotten any bigger. Haven’t went down, but not bigger. Where is his mind????? Another big heavy sigh………………………… He has gotten stung earlier this summer, but those two did not well up. That was why these had me concerned. I used to not have swelling at stings either and then about 15 years ago got stung and it got about the size of a penny. Next sting was size of quarter - half dollar. One after that was bigger and last time (about 2 years ago) the entire calf of my leg swelled up. Doctor says I must be allergic to them now, hence the increase in size of the sting sites each time. I have been lucky since moving here, as we seem to have a lot of the darn things. This is the third nest of ground hornets we have found. The first one was when
poor Murphy found it in the back yard and got stung and had to be rushed out to vets. He was in hospital for about a week. Then a month or so later found another one in the back yard by the fence and Bill poured gasoline into it (after sundown of course). First one I used an entire can of wasp-hornet spray into it, after sundown. Will have to find the opening of this third one and kill them. Have found a bunch of new ways since taking care of the last two. Mix boric acid with tuna, roll into tiny balls and leave near nest (but not where our kiddos can get into them) and the hornets love to eat them, also will take back to queen (or queens) and it kills them (by “heart burn”), or put a piece of dry ice at the nest site and as it melts, it will saturate the ground with CO2 and that will kill them, or spray the nest with fire extinguisher (that contains CO2) and that will kill them. But spray after dark. All the hornets are at the nest for the night and also usually asleep, so
they aren’t active and the stuff can kill them before they can get active and out of the nest.
Love,
Sue
