About the emails going around about the Formosan termites and the danger of using mulch:
They do exist. In the southern states. And there was an infestation of them
in Louisiana. At first when people started taking off the plywood that they
used for protection during the hurricane, some used it in building new homes
(to save money on buying new and the shortage of wood products), the plywood
had been up long enough that some of it got infested and when used in homes,
transferred the termites to those homes. But the officials soon figured out
what was happening and put a quarantine on using any wood products and any
mulch. Now they all have to go to a special land fill. Also they gave a
detailed explanation about why Lowe’s and Home Depot would not carry mulch
that would be infested. They also explained that in any of the states with
temps that will get down to freezing the termites would die out, because their
eggs can not hatch if it gets too cold. So they can’t survive in the upper
states. It had a lot of info about the whole thing at www.snopes.com.

Sue
