Well, fun, fun fun, de-fun! Blah!

The last lab work done for Dr. Uchiyama included more extensive blood work about the iron deficiency. The results of that suggested one of two things.: (sorry if this one is too graphic) if I am having prolonged heavy “monthly visitor” I should contact my gyn about it, however that is not the case at all. The second thing was to then contact a gastro/intestinal doc (which I have one I see fairly regular since colon cancer runs in both sides of my family). I called that doc’s office today and “oh fun - oh fun” I am now scheduled for endoscopy and colonoscopy to be done same time on Monday, Jan. 22. If those are negative, the next thing Dr. Peterson wants to do is have me do one of those encapsulated cameras; the one that is in a large capsule you swallow and it films it’s “travel” all through your body. I am just so thrilled about this I could just …

Looks like next week will be a busy one for me. The “oscopies” on Monday and the knee surgery on Wednesday. At least with the knee surgery, I don’t have all that pre-procedure stuff to go through. At least this time it is only a 24 hour one, and not a three day one like the last time. But still no food for the 24 hours before, only clear liquids (and nothing red colored: cherry or strawberry jello or such) and that bottle of nasty tasting stuff in the morning (like liquid dynamite for bathroom) and four laxatives that after noon and the even more fun the next morning of enemas.

Thank goodness our wedding anniversary falls on Saturday so I will have all that day to be able to eat a nice meal to celebrate 34 years of marriage. Cause the next day, Sunday starts the 24 hour prep for Monday’s procedures. Will get to have gentle foods on Tuesday until midnight, cause after midnight nothing by mouth for the knee surgery the next day. Oh well, maybe some good will come out of all this and I will lose some weight from not eating.

Sue, you do indeed have an ordeal ahead of you. The only thing I can tell you is, don’t be afraid of the colonoscopy. It used to be extremely painful (made my husband cry - in 20 years I never saw that) is no longer true. These days they sedate you and you don’t feel a thing. I had benadryl for my anesthetic and that was a strange sensation - scared the **** out of me, in fact - but there was no pain. I have a stoma so I didn’t have to do any pre-op stuff. You may have to have someone drive you, as some hospitals won’t let you drive after anesthesia. I had to take a taxi home. Take heart! - it will soon be over. Good luck with your results.
